Durham win Friends Provident Trophy
A stormer of a final put the overwhelming favourites Hampshire in their place as Durham set all kinds of records as they steamrollered to victory.
Despite losing the toss, the "Dynamos" were always in control, carving out a new benchmark of 312 for domestic 50-over cricket. In Hampshire's reply, yet another fine display from Ottis Gibson kept the underdogs on the straight and narrow, as he took two wickets with the first two balls and followed that up a few overs afterwards by taking the prize scalp of Kevin Pietersen.
John Crawley and Nic Pothas tried to lead a revival, but the damage had already been done. They simply couldn't chase down the total set with huge contributions from Kyle Coetzer, Shiv Chanderpaul and Dale Benkenstein. Rain interrupted play yesterday evening, meaning that it dragged on into a reserve day, but Paul Collingwood and Liam Plunkett made short work of wrapping up the tail, bowling Hampshire out for 187. Thinking about the key players in one-day cricket this year, can we draw on the wisdom of Bevis watching Aerosmith and say, "These guys are, like, really old"?
Rather than these England Lions games, I'd like to see an Under-30 Select take on an Over-30 Select and I know where my money would be.

Well done Durham and especially Otis Gibson. It just goes to show what you can do if you keep your fitness up, unlike some of the bottlers who chose an easy life in the commentators box (Atherton etc. etc.).
I watched it with bitter-sweet memories of Lancs v Sussex almost 1 year ago.
It's just a pity it went into the 2nd day and so Durham had to celebrate in an empty ground.
