Holding - West Indies Cricket Board "don't have a clue"
Michael Holding is a man whose laid back manner hides a fierce love of cricket, a shrewd mind and forthright opinions; and today he has let the WICB have it with both barrels.
MIchael was holding (sorry!) court to BBC Sport when he fired the broadside at the the West Indies governing body's lack of action in developing a proper infrastructure for young talent to come through. The former quick held nothing back, "It's time someone woke up and realised what is needed. I think many years ago they just sat down and the cricketers kept coming through and they thought they were doing their job - they weren't doing anything. It was just a natural thing that was happening in West Indies cricket at that time.
"And now that they actually have to try to do something they haven't got a clue what to do."
To muddy the already filthy waters even further Dr Keith Mitchell, the Prime Minister of Grenada, has stated that it is no longer possible for Caribbean governments not to be involved in the running of the game. "Certainly, governments do not want to be involved in the selection of players, of teams and so on but to say that we should not be involved is ridiculous because we've already been involved significantly by the level of investment on behalf of the taxpayers," Mitchell said today.
I'm sure if anything will sort out cricket in the Caribbean it will be government interference; we all know what a raging success governments are when they get involved in anything that is outside of their basic remit of talking shite and ignoring the electorate. [Image: Getty]

Did Mikey suggest what they should do to improve matters ? A powerful West Indies side would increase the global profile of the Caribbean. As a yoof, my knowledge and interest in the area was driven by cricket, the most famous thing about New Zealand is it's rugby team.
I think it is time that the politicians got involved. The first step would be a serious and viable inter-island competition and most local boards need a few bob to get themselves in order.

I'm with Bush on this one.
Mikey was a great player and is a fine commentator, but if he really, really loved the game, he'd forego the Murdoch shilling and do a bit of coaching / leadership.

Wonderful description of governments Lee. Couldn't agree more. Like Bush I became interested in the Caribbean through cricket but it is now reggae that keeps the curiousity burning. Also agree with Toots. It's easy to talk about problems but what the Windies need is the champs of yesteryear to be intimately involved. It is far too easy to whine about the decline. Perhaps Mr Holding could offer a solution.

Mr Holding is correct, the last thing WI cricket needs right now is to be ran by a group of politicians! WICB has been a joke for the last decade, no facilities for the development of cricket in the caribbean. How can the "champs" of yester-year get involved when there are no facilities, no schools, no where to nurture the natural talent of express pace that the WI is known for. First and foremost the WICB needs to focus on getting a proper training facility. Dr Keith Mitchel was as ass when he built a cricket ground in Grenada for the world cup, now its sitting there, not being used, not being marketed and he's wanting a return on his investment, but he should have thought about it before trying to get Grenada to host a World Cup game! They tried to follow the likes of St. Lucia where a world class cricket ground was built, but Grenada does not have the kind if tourism market that St. Lucia has, sorry Keith, but Crapo will smoke your pipe! (An old West Indian saying)
