World Cup Greatest Moments: Mushtaq's googly, 1992
Mushtaq Ahmed may look like a chubby asian cherub, but
at his best he bowls like a chubby asian genius, and the 1992 tournament saw
him bowl some of the greatest form of his life as his sixteen wickets
proved. Of those wickets the one that accounted for Graeme Hick in the
final stands head and shoulders above the others. I imagine Hick lies awake at night thinking about two things: Curtly Ambrose and Mushtaq's googly; he then hears someone quietly weeping and realises it is himself.
Amazingly, in 1992 England actually had a very good one day cricket team, and went into the tournament with some hope of doing well rather than hoping against hope they wouldn't be an utter embarrassment. They duly reached the final of what was a very competitive tournament and would face Imran Khan's Pakistan at the MCG.
Having been set a target of 249 to win, England lost their early wickets cheaply bringing in Hick who then slowly began to play himself in. Imran brought on Mushtaq, Mushtaq spun his googly, Hick walked to the shed. England lost. Again.
